A box ship belonging to MSC panamax reportedly lost over 40 empty containers overboard in poor weather conditions about 350 nm toward the east of Bermuda.
The Bermuda Maritime Operations Center reported the incident. It was further advised over an email from the MSC Shristi that it had lost about 46 boxes thrice.
The 4,738 teu Liberian-flagged ship had set sail for the Dominican Republic from Boston. Last year, the Washington-based liner lobby group dubbed the World Shipping Council (WSC) reportedly initiated a three-year study after its report covering 2020–2021 reflected an increase in the number of containers that were lost at sea, with an average loss for the two years of 3,113 compared to the mere 779 registered in the earlier phase.
MSC also moved to minimize the risk of losing boxes by contracting with the Norwegian classification society DNV in September 2022 to deploy the Anti-Roll for Containerships (ARCS) class notation and Anti-Roll Assist system on about 100 vessels.
The contract reportedly spans dozens of newbuilds, ships in operation, and vessels yet to be constructed, ranging from 1,800 TEU to the largest vessels at approximately 24,000 TEU.
